Spring is around the corner (hopefully!) and that has got us thinking about all the work we hope to accomplish on the REAL big white farmhouse.
After our Great-Gram passed away in December 2010, our family was faced with the tough decision of whether to sell her farmhouse. After a lot of conversations and research, we decided to keep the home in our family. Since then, we've undertaken the very exciting, but daunting, task of renovating the house.
It's been a lot of work, but we've made a ton of progress! Fortunately, the home has no major structural problems. Considering it was built sometime in the mid 1800's (with our family moving in sometime in the late 1800s), that is nothing short of miraculous! We've tackled all the cosmetic work ourselves on weekends and during vacations. There is still much to accomplish, but we're happy to share a sneak peak of our big white farmhouse.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue working on the home this spring and summer!
The beautiful foyer is my favorite room in the home. It has the most exquisite vintage light fixture, which has graced the space as far back as anyone can remember.
We stripped all the old, peeling green wallpaper from these walls (you can see some remnants on the right side of the staircase), and then primed and painted them a pale cream color.
Next up, we plan to put a fresh coat of white paint on the ceilings and molding. We also need to finish striping the wallpaper along the staircase wall (we swear Gram used cement to adhere the green paper!) Our longer term plans include replacing the carpet.
The Living Room
The home is fairly large, and every.single.square.inch was covered in faded wallpaper. Stripping the walls was no easy task, but we are almost there!
This view shows the living room, foyer, parlor, and 1 (of 2) first floor bedroom after we finished stripping the walls, treating and prepping them, and then priming them for paint. Pictures to follow soon of these walls painted and linoleum removed to reveal wide pine floors!
The Children's Bedroom
My dad (Ashley's Uncle and Godfather), admiring his hard work in his childhood bedroom on the 2nd floor. The "back room" has always been the kids spot, and was where my cousins and I also slept whenever we visited growing up.
This past summer, we stripped the wallpaper, patched, primed and painted the room a pear green. Next up, we plan to either refinish or paint the wide pine floors, and update the light fixture.
We look forward to the day when the new generation of cousins occupy this room during visits to the farmhouse.
Thanks for following along on our renovation journey!
